| Environment, a General Statement |
Biden: We should not have to worry that a grandfather taking his grandchild to a favorite fishing hole is exposing her to dioxin contamination; or that when students turn on a faucet at school, they swallow arsenic; or that acid rain is showering us – especially when corporate responsibility could prevent it. | Global Warming, Climate Change |
Biden: Addressing Climate Change: Senator Biden is continuing his strong environmental record by co-sponsoring the most aggressive bill in the Senate to reverse global warming – the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act. The Act would implement aggressive policies to limit greenhouse gas emissions and help avert the major problems warming of our planet could cause – such as altering growing seasons; redistributing natural resources; and lifting sea levels.
Leading The World: Global warming requires a global solution. As Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Biden has made returning the US to a leadership role in international climate treaty negotiations a top priority. He co-authored a bipartisan resolution directing the President to return to international negotiations and reclaim a leadership role for the United States in the fight against global warming.
Climate change poses a similar security threat. The Center for Naval Analysis recently concluded that we are only beginning to understand the threat that climate change poses. If temperatures rise 3-5 degrees, oceans could rise nearly 3 feet. By one estimate, 200 million people could be permanently displaced. Droughts and changes in resources in other parts of the world can also lead to conflict. Joe Biden would establish a comprehensive Energy and Climate Change Security Plan to transform the nation into a world leader on energy and climate change by: 1. Establishing A Responsible Policy Toward Iran 2. Restoring US Leadership On Climate Change 3. Increasing Fuel Efficiency and Use of Renewable Fuels 4. Investing In New Energy Technology 5. Expanding Renewable Energy 6. Requiring the Federal Government To Use Energy More Efficiently 7. Encouraging Americans to Use Energy Efficiently 8. Creating Green Jobs in the Technology of Tomorrow. | Power Plant Emissions |
Biden: Joe Biden wants tougher standards for power plant emissions. He supports the Clean Power Act which would require power plants to achieve specific reductions in emissions of sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and mercury. Joe Biden has opposed and will continue to fight attempts to roll back environmental safeguards and threaten the quality of our air and water. He fought the Administration’s plan to gut the New Source Review standards by allowing power plants to avoid their obligations to install modern pollution controls. Joe Biden also supports limiting exports of mercury to stop the harmful pollution of our oceans with mercury. Source: www.joebiden.com Date: 12/10/2007 |

Biden: Senator Biden has been an ardent supporter of efforts to reinstate the Superfund fees so that polluters pay for the cleanup of toxic sites, not taxpayers. Restoring these funds will speed up clean-ups. Source: biden.senate.gov/issues Date: 04/22/2008 |

• Protect Pea Patch Island and Fort Delaware from devastating coastal erosion.
• Control flooding long the Little Mill Creek in Elsmere.

| Invasive Species |
Biden: Senator Biden has been a strong support of efforts to combat the problem of invasive species – plants and animals improperly brought to U.S. shores. Senator Biden feels that non-native species have the potential to be one of the largest economic and environmental threats in the 21st century. Non-native species alter vegetation, compete with native species, introduce new diseases and interfere with maritime commerce. Conscious of these dangers, Senator Biden continues to support programs aimed at preventing the importation of non-native plants and animals to the United States.
